On day one, we will reach Manali – the place where our adventure expedition starts. There is no denying to the fact that Manali is a perfect place for flag-off. A beautiful town in Himachal Pradesh that bustles with tourists, Manali offers guests an opportunity to explore the Mall Road of the town and old Manali for some nice eateries and shopping.
Manali to Chhatru
Today, we will start our journey from Manali towards Chattru. As we take a narrow road circling through thick deodar forest towards Marhi, the famous Rohtang Pass awaits us to test our driving skills as we rapidly gain elevation from 6,726 feet to 13,054 feet.
Chhatru lies on the other side of the Pass, and is about 83 kms from Manali. The place stands out like an oasis in the middle of Spiti in Himachal Pradesh. The drive-through is a little bumpy. Chhatru is one of the unexplored places in Himachal Pradesh. The place is less crowded and so clean that one can feel completely near to nature. This will be the place for overnight stay at Camp Tethys Chhatru.
Chhatru to Chander Taal to Chhatru
Today, after breakfast, we will head towards Kunzum Pass. This is one of the highest mountain passes which connects Lahaul Valley and Spiti Valley. You can spot a large number of bikers visiting this spot to experience the most thrilling ride through the pass. The view is absolutely admirable.
After spending some time at the pass, we will descend back to Batal – the place where a jeepable road bifurcates towards Chandra Taal, which is about 14 kms away. The route is narrow, dangerous and beautiful to indulge in photography. The majestic mountains, turquoise blue water of Chandra River flowing alongside, and quiet surroundings make it a perfect place for adventurer and camping.
Driving carefully along the narrow curves and rough terrain for about half an hour, we reach the dead-end, which is 1 km before the lake. We walk up to the nearest hillock to discover the most beautiful jewel of Spiti Valley – Chandra Taal. The lake is so beautiful and serene that it looks like a place from a Sci-Fi movie. We take a moment to bow and thank the mother nature for bestowing us such a beautiful gift and head back to the campsite for an overnight stay at Camp Tethys at Chhatru.
Chhatru to Shinku La to Udaipur
Today, after having breakfast, we will proceed towards Shinku La. At an altitude of 16,589 feet, Shinku La is a mountain pass that connects Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. Despite such high altitudes, roads at Darcha and beyond are in so good shape that you will hardly feel a bump.
Beautiful and massive snow patches can be seen as we venture further into the valley. After witnessing magnificence of mighty Himalayas up close, we will call it a day at Udaipur to enjoy camping by the Chandrabhaga River at Tethys Camp, Udaipur.
Udaipur to Manali
This is the last leg of our adventure expedition as we head towards the place where it all started, i.e., Manali. While discussing the highs and lows of the Himalayas, we will explore the famous Trilokinath temple on the way back.
What more lies in the day ahead is a chance to admire open sand basins of the Chandrabhaga River that perfectly fall in perspective with the sky-piercing peaks in the backdrop.
We will drive through the iconic ‘Atal Tunnel, Rohtang’ to reach Manali in the evening for an overnight stay at a cosy hotel.
This is the end of our fun-filled and adventurous road journey. Have a safe and pleasant journey back home.
