La Himalaya has been operating the Spiti valley road expedition in winters from last five years now. We cover most of the offbeat locations in this trip.

Spiti Valley is a beautiful cold desert mountain valley located high in the Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh.

Sach Pass is one of the most difficult passes to cross in North India at the height of 4500m that runs over the Pir Panjal Mountain range. It connects Dalhousie with Chamba and Pangi Valleys.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Narkanda

On Day 1 guests will travel from their location and reach Narkanda . The night stay will be at Tethys Resort in Narkanda with introductory session while enjoying bonfire, snacks, drinks, music, dance and dinner.

Narkanda is a beautiful and serene hill town of the Himachal Pradesh state that has also been blessed with salubrious weather, all throughout the year. Below Narkanda, to the north is the Sutlej Valley and beyond it is the snowy massif.

Day 2 & Day 3

Sangla

On day 2 you will be in Sangla, a small town in a town in the Baspa Valley in Kinnaur. This is one of the most beautiful places in Kinnaur This place is known for its greenery and beautiful orchards. The valley is covered by cherry and apple trees.

You will enjoy the night stay in Banjara Retreat surrounded by high mountain peaks. This charming camp is a great place to stay as it gives you an amazing treat being an ideal place to feel the beauty of nature and enjoy it at its best.

Day 2 & Day 3

Sangla

On Day 2 you will be in Sangla, a small town in a town in the Baspa Valley in Kinnaur. This is one of the most beautiful places in Kinnaur This place is known for its greenery and beautiful orchards. The valley is covered by cherry and apple trees.

Day 4

Nako

On Day 4 you will move to Nako – located near the Indo-China border in Kinnaur, HP. La Himalaya will be the first travel company to have Nako as the destination for stay in winters. This place will be extremely cold. Temperature will go down -10 to -12 degree C during nights.
Nako lake enhances the beauty of this highest village in the valley. There are many small, but significant Buddhist temples in the villages. Gates in the village streets are built from stone and wood. They are painted with colourful Buddhist religious paintings. Reaching Nako in winter is itself an adventure.

You will enjoy the night stay at homestay with great hospitality.

Day 5, Day 6 & Day 7

Kaza

On Day 5, 6 & 7 you will move to Kaza – a small town and commercial center in Spiti Valley in the western Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh. Kaja is surrounded by high mountain ridges from all sides. This is the coldest towns of India.

This place is well known for its colourful festivals. It is also famous or its pure wool shawls, carpets and woolen clothes. Night stay will be in a homestay.

Day 5, Day 6 & Day 7

Kaza

On Day 5, 6 & 7 you will move to Kaza – a small town and commercial center in Spiti Valley in the western Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh. Kaja is surrounded by high mountain ridges from all sides. This is the coldest towns of India.

This place is well known for its colourful festivals. It is also famous or its pure wool shawls, carpets and woolen clothes. Night stay will be in a homestay.

Day 8 & Day 9

Kalpa & Narkanda

On Day 8 you will move to Kalpa, a small town in the Sutlej river valley, above Reckong Peo in the Kinnaur. The beauty of this little village is unbelievable. The amazing, panoramic views of Kinner Kailash are simply breathtaking. It is around 265 km from Shimla on the NH-5.

Kalpa is covered by apple orchards, pine and deodar forests. The town is known for many ancient temples. It has all the characteristics of a heritage village. In winter, the temperature in Kalpa touches -15 to -20 degree Celsius. There is a heavy snowfall in Kalpa in December however, the road gets open pretty quickly as soon as snow fall stops.

You will enjoy the night stay at The Grand Shamba la with great hospitality. They are known to make your stay in Kalpa as pleasant & memorable as possible by offering the best services. The Grand Shambala has a meditation room, in-house restaurant, fireplace & a well equipped library.

On Day 9 you will move back to Narkanda, and enjoy the stay in Tethys Resort.

*There will be no running water in the taps in most of the locations as they are located at high altitude and the temperature will be extremely low during this period of time. So you might have to use dry toilets.

Day 8 & Day 9

Kalpa & Narkanda

On Day 8 you will move to Kalpa, a small town in the Sutlej river valley, above Reckong Peo in the Kinnaur. The beauty of this little village is unbelievable. The amazing, panoramic views of Kinner Kailash are simply breathtaking. It is around 265 km from Shimla on the NH-5.

Kalpa is covered by apple orchards, pine and deodar forests. The town is known for many ancient temples. It has all the characteristics of a heritage village. Do not forget to bring your own sleeping bag for nights in the remote locations.

Always maintain a first aid kit with all the necessary medicines, adhesive bandages, thermometer, water purification tablets, antibiotics, antiseptic creams, petroleum jellies like vaseline etc.

The change of water may cause an upset stomach.

Do keep portable fresh drinking water with you all the time. If having water from outside, take only mineral water bottles and ensure that the seal is not broken. Even in restaurants, take bottled mineral water only and not the water served there.

Don’t use and discard polythene/ plastics/ other hazardous material.

In order to avoid dehydration drink fluids.

Make it a habit to wear a cap or a scarf and apply sunscreen while roaming in the sun and cover your head and ears to protect from the cold breeze.

Do not stay out after it gets too dark, the wildlife may surprise you.

If your driver is driving dangerously, refuse to travel with him.

Sleeping bag (essential): mattress will be provided every night, please bring your own sleeping bag for nights in the remote locations.
